Mentoring Scheme

JSS Academy of Technical Education, NOIDA, is totally committed to enable students to make positive changes and form choices. For this, we have created this learning and development partnership between the Mentor and the student for the psycho-social support, career guidance, role modeling, and communication that happens in the mentoring milieu in which the protégés and mentors are involved.

The Institution believes that the face-to-face interaction involved in the mentoring system will, in a sustained period of time, bring the following results:

  • Increase the students’ self-confidence
  • Help the students learn to take better control of his or her career
  • Teach the students how to speak up and be heard
  • Educate the students on how to be aware of his inadequacies and accept feedback in important areas as communication, technical abilities, interpersonal relationships and leadership skills.
  • Provide an important networking contact for the student
  • Help the students understand the organization's culture and unspoken rules better, both of which can be critical for success.
  • They are Supportive: By far, the most important role of a mentor is to support and encourage young people, particularly as they struggle to overcome obstacles and solve problems. Our youngsters hail from places far away. When they are upset or unhappy in their life situations, mentors are with them, letting them talk about anything and reminding them of their inherent worth.
  • They are Active Listeners Mentors listen first and speak last. Our students have often expressed how little they feel listened to by their elders. Often, they feel inferior even when they have good ideas. But mentors are different. They always listen, thereby helping with the increased self-esteem of the students.
  • They foster Self- decision making When the student realizes he is not being judged, he feels comfortable to think through decisions critically. He also is more willing to face the consequences of the choices he is making.
  • They put things in perspective Adult mentors provide perspective to young people from the advantage of their additional years of life experience. When obstacles seem insuperable, mentors help put those challenges in perspective. Also, when the over confident student has a ready solution to offer for every problem, the mentor helps see both sides of a situation, thus aiding with the skills of positive skepticism.
  • Performance in CIAs : The mentor conducts three meetings per semester, normally within 10 days after the completion of each internal assessment test. During the meeting, the mentor interacts with all the mentees individually, listen to their problems, make efforts to address the problems and also provide suggestions. The mentor also communicates the performance in CIA tests and attendance status of mentees to the respective parents. Wherever necessary, the mentor, in consultation with the HOD and the concerned Course teacher, arrange additional tutorial or remedial classes
  • Number of faculty mentors: All faculty members (Engineering branches) are mentors and also first year faculty members.
  • Number of students per mentor: Around 20 students. Each mentor is allotted a group of students (20) who remain attached to the Mentor for a period of 4 years (till their completion of the program). .
  • The proceedings of the mentor meetings are recorded and documented. Process followed: Mentoring is done on a one- to- one basis, i.e, the Mentor calls one student at his desk at a time, listens to the problem , counsels him/her on the matter/s that warrant special attention. Otherwise, the more regularly followed method is when the Mentor meets all the 20-22 assigned students together

Efficiency of the Mentoring system:

  • When the Mentor listens actively rather than passively, he/she has not only shared knowledge, but has helped to increase the student’s sense of self-worth. This facet of the Mentoring system is paid ample attention to build future leaders and to promote a sense of cooperation and harmony within the organization from the student community.
  • Everything from high levels of absenteeism to recurring behavior problems have been taken care of.
  • A chance to explore avenues that a student is good at but has always felt diffident to try, has been attempted by the student. This has caused increased self-confidence in the student.
  • Attitudinal change, Improvement in skill set of laboratory
  • The mentoring practice has improved academic performance of weak students and reduced the student dropouts. It also improved number of university rank holders, admissions to higher studies.
